Washing your hands for over 20secs frequently throughout the day has led to many people suffering from sore and damaged skin. In order to protect ourselves from Covid-19 and other flu viruses this very important structure has to be protected!

Skin has a lot of different functions not only is it the bodies largest organ but it is the barrier between us and the outside world. As our first line of defence against infections entering the body its important that we look after it. In order to look after our skin, we need to understand the main factors that keep it healthy.

1. Protect yourself from the sun

2. Don't smoke

3. Treat your skin gently

4. Eat a healthy diet

5. Manage stress

We have all learnt that the sun causes skin damage if not protected with appropriate SPF Sunscreens. We know that not only is smoking damaging to your skin but also to your general health. Dietary control of many conditions including the health of skin is well documented, along with the effects of stress on skin and many other organs of the body.

However, with the current Covid-19 pandemic and the need to wash your hands more frequently, often the ‘process’ of washing your hands has led to over vigorous scrubbing of the skin resulting in damage, dryness and less resilience to infection as a result.

The message is ‘keep it gentle’ avoid strong soaps that strip oil from the skin. Avoid extremes of water temperature, pat your hands dry rather than rubbing and use a moisturiser that suits your skin type.

If your skin barrier is compromised seek advice from a pharmacist as to the best course of action. Remember prevention is better than the cure!
